Guangzhou has one of China’s most extensive and modern public transport systems.

Guangzhou Metro

14+ lines serving 190+ stations across the city and connecting to Foshan:

  • Fare: Distance-based, 2–14 CNY per trip
  • APM Line: Flat 2 CNY (separate fare, not counted in distance system)
  • Hours: ~6:00–24:00
  • Yang Cheng Tong card: Rechargeable card with discounts (up to 60% for frequent riders)
  • One-Day Pass: 20 CNY for unlimited metro travel (24 hours)
  • Three-Day Pass: 50 CNY

Key lines for visitors:

  • Line 1: Guangzhou East Railway Station–Xilang (Chen Clan Academy, Yuexiu Park)
  • Line 2: Jiahewanggang–Guangzhou South Railway Station
  • Line 3: Airport North–Panyu Square (Airport, Tiyu Xilu, Canton Tower)
  • Line 5: Jiaokou–Wenchong (Pearl River New Town)
  • Guangfo Line: Links Guangzhou with Foshan

Buses

Extensive bus network (1,200+ lines):

  • Fare: 2–5 CNY (2 CNY for most routes under 20 km, 3 CNY for longer)
  • Payment: Yang Cheng Tong card, Alipay, WeChat Pay, or cash (exact change)
  • BRT (Bus Rapid Transit): 2 CNY, dedicated lanes on Zhongshan Avenue

Taxis

  • Start: 12 CNY (includes first 3 km)
  • Per km: 2.60 CNY
  • Flag fall: 12 CNY day, 13 CNY night (23:00–05:00)
  • Apps: DiDi (Didi Chuxing) is the dominant ride-sharing app — works in English

Airport Transfer

Baiyun International Airport (CAN) to city centre:

  • Metro Line 3: ~1 hour, 8 CNY
  • Airport Express bus: ~25–30 CNY
  • Taxi: ~150–250 CNY, ~40 minutes
  • Free shuttle between Terminal 1 and 2

Tips

  • Yang Cheng Tong cards can be bought and recharged at any metro station
  • Apple Pay and Alipay work with Yang Cheng Tong on iPhones
  • English signage is good in the metro but limited on buses
  • Download DiDi in advance for ride-sharing (supports English and foreign cards)
  • The Canton Fair period (April & October) means higher demand for transport
